Seismic Responses of Aqueducts Using a New Type of Self-Centering Seismic Isolation Bearing

چکیده

An aqueduct is a bridge-like structure that supports canal passing over river or low ground, and it an important part of water conveyance system. Aqueduct piers are extremely vulnerable to damage during strong earthquakes can result in structural collapse. Further, excessive seismic displacement will also fracture aqueduct’s rubber water-stop interrupt the normal service after earthquake. Therefore, improving capacity post-earthquake resilience aqueducts great importance. In this paper, new type self-centering isolation bearing, inclined plane guide bearing (IPGB), proposed for design aqueducts, studied both experimentally numerically. Firstly, typical project setting IPGBs introduced. Then, test design, cases, results shaking table tests two different pier-height presented. The responses models studied, show used has smaller better resilience. Finally, numerical simulation method applicable using proposed, its accuracy verified by comparing test.

Application of Shape Memory Alloys in Seismic Isolation: A Review

In the last two decades, there has been an increasing interest in structural engineering control methods. Shape memory alloys and seismic isolation systems are examples of passive control systems that use of any one alone, effectively improve the seismic performance of the structure. Characteristics such as large strain range without any residual deformation, high damping capacity, excellent re...

Seismic Response Control Using Base Isolation Strategy

Earthquakes are one of the natural hazards that occur due to sudden violent movement of earth’s surface which releases energy and has destructive power in many parts of the world. The development of recent technologies for the control of seismic hazards catches the attention of structural engineers to make the structures seismically resistant. The seismic base isolation technique is a passive p...

Design Principles of Seismic Isolation

In earthquake resistance design of structures, two general concepts have been used. The first is to increase the capacity of the structures to resist the earthquake load effects (mostly horizontal forces) or to increase the dynamic stiffness such as the seismic energy dissipation ability by adding damping systems (both devices and/or structural fuses). The second concept includes seismic isolat...

A NEW APPROACH FOR EVALUATION OF SEISMIC SLOPE PERFORMANCE

The evaluation of seismic slope performance during earthquakes is important, because the failure of slope (such as an earth dam, natural slope, or constructed earth embankment) can result in significant financial losses and human. It is important, therefore, to be able to forecast such displacements induced by earthquake. However, the traditional forecasting methods, such as empirical formulae,...

Seismic Bearing Capacity of Strip Footings on Pile-Stabilized Slopes

This paper develops an analytical method to calculate seismic bearing capacity of a strip footing, which is located on a slope reinforced with rows of pile. The resistance of passive pile is determined based on normal and shear stress of the soil around the pile, which is then compared to other analytical methods. This comparison indicates an acceptable agreement. The variants of the study incl...
